New Lease on Life
Karen Moran, RN, approaches her job with the same enthusiasm she approaches life. As a staff development educator at Sentara Leigh Hospital, she is often on the move. After being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2008, she finds that slowing down can sometimes be the biggest challenge. Moran’s diagnosis took years. After several unexplained falls, it was numbness in her leg that persisted which led to the MS diagnosis. Determined to stay active, Moran maintains her regular exercise by swimming at the Y three times a week. For Moran and others who suffer from MS or stroke, the partial leg paralysis prevents the foot from lifting properly to walk. Referred to as “foot drop,” it can cause instability, making walking difficult and limiting function and independence.
