David Bernd, CEO Sentara Healthcare, is one of two recipients of this year’s CEO IT Achievement Award by Modern Healthcare magazine and HIMSS, a respected healthcare analytics firm. In its eighth year, this program has recognized 20 healthcare CEOs who demonstrate leadership and a commitment to using information technology to advance their organizations’ goals.
Bernd is quick to give credit to the entire Sentara system for helping to make the vision a reality for patients in our communities. While recognizing IT efforts specifically, this award represents the work of an entire system, according to Bernd. Without the cooperation of all Sentara employees, including clinical staff from all our facilities, physicians, administrators and everyone involved in patient care, these efforts cannot be successful Bernd adds.
Bernd’s leadership during the Sentara eCare concept approval, design and build phase and implementation helped earn this distinguished award. Challenging system leadership to consider the increasing role of technology in the healthcare setting has become an integral part of the Sentara Strategic Plan.
“We have married the use of technology with the hands-on care that is delivered at the bedside to improve the patient experience,” Bernd says. “This was truly a team effort that has been years in the making and I’m very proud of this accomplishment for our organization. It is really recognition of our collective effort.”
Modern Healthcare will profile this year’s recipients in a special section to be published in the magazine’s June 14 issue. Modern Healthcare and HIMSS will honor Bernd at the 2010 Government Health IT Conference & Exhibition to be held June 15-16 in Washington.
