Dr. Terry Gilliland brings diverse physician and business expertise.
Sentara Healthcare CEO David Bernd announced today that Dr. Terry Gilliland will serve as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Sentara. He will assume his new duties effective March 11, 2013.
Gilliland comes to Sentara after 17 years with Kaiser Permanente and the Permanente Medical Group. Most recently, he served as the Associate Medical Director of the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, a 500,000 member group with 1,000 physicians across 30 medical locations and affiliations with several hospitals in the Mid-Atlantic region.
“We are pleased to add the talents of Dr. Gilliland on our executive team,” Bernd said. “He brings extensive knowledge and expertise in areas of strategic importance to our company and shares our passion for quality patient care.”
Gilliland completed his medical education at UCLA and general surgery internship and residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center. Gilliland was in private practice in Mountain View, CA before joining the Colorado Permanente Medical Group. He also has an MS degree in Management from Stanford University.
As the CMO for Sentara Healthcare, Gilliland will serve as the lead physician executive responsible for ensuring the quality and effectiveness of clinical care throughout the health system. He will work closely with the medical community and health system leadership to plan, coordinate and oversee that the medical affairs for the health system remain consistent with the Sentara strategic plan.
During his leadership tenure at the Kaiser organization, Gilliland helped to develop high performance, data driven teams in key strategic business units, including hospital utilization, pharmacy, ASCs, claims and utilization management.
“Sentara stands to benefit from Dr. Gilliland’s physician leadership experience within two different Permanente Medical Groups across two diverse regions of the country and from his years in private practice as a General Surgeon,” added Bernd in a company announcement. “We know he will be a valuable physician leader as we embark on new strategic initiatives and continue our goal to provide high quality, lower cost healthcare in an ever-changing landscape.”
